Recap
At half 3 yesterday afternoon we were 2-0 down & not at the races (mirroring our opening league game of last season when we were at home to Chasetown & 2 nil down at half time). Then we came up with the most majestically executed training ground free kick that you will ever see. Jack Wightwick pulled the ball back to Nathan Jarman – The Starman pulled off an air shot that put the ball at Brad Graysons feet. Brad pulled off an air shot of his own which completely wrong footed the home defence – allowing Brad to toe poke the ball into the path of the marauding Miller who smashed home from an angle.
So we went in at half time 2-1 down which was probably more than we deserved (although we had a goal chalked off for…..well, I’m not sure anyone knows & we should have had a penalty due to a windmill of flailing elbows on the back of Margs head).
We started the second half in a better tempo & it only took us 8 minutes to get to parity. I don’t have the full details as I was on the lavatory but I emerged just in time to see birthday boy Nathan Jarman blasting home.
Chasetown continued to press & hit the bar twice with Tyler clearing the follow up off the line on both occasions. At the other end Margs was flattened in the box & a free kick was given against him & then the Chasetown defence played Harlem Globetrotters with the ball on the line but nothing given.
We peppered the home goal as Chasetown started to crumble under our pressure but we couldn’t get the end result despite the best efforts of Wightwick, Kegan & Margs.
We hit the 90th minute with a draw looking the most likely result but then Margs burst into the box, only to end up on the deck from a manoeuvre that would have done Tiger Dalibar Singh proud on the wrestling on World of Sport in the 70s. He jumped up to make if 3-2 to The Azzurri & sparked a massive (socially distanced) all pile on of players, coaching staff & fans.
Overall did we merit the 3 points – probably not. At the final whistle, did we have the 3 point – 100%. Never was the phrase ‘win ugly’ more appropriate – give me an ugly win over a pretty defeat any day.
WEBMASTER MOTM – on a largely under par performance, the players that caught the eye; Tyler did well, Hotte & Kegan did all the unseen graft in midfield. Jarman provided plenty of nicks & flicks in difficult swirly conditions & Colonel Miller was on point at the back & scored the goal that brought us back into the game. But Jack Wightwick stood out – & he gets the Glitterball, well done sir.
TWITTER POLL MOTM – Starman Jarman took the poll by some distance from Wightwick with Tyler & Kern also polling. Thank you to everyone who voted.
Shout out to the officials who were great value for money with their Free Form Jazz interpretation of the laws of the game – nnnniiiicccceeee.
The Gaffers wind assisted thoughts on the game.
310 through the gate with big numbers from South Elmsall once again & it was great to see the whole squad applauding the 2 pockets of travelling fans at the end of the game.
Next up we are at home to Marine on Tuesday night in the FA Cup – let’s get the Wezzie rocking
