Recap

Preseason Friendly:

Frickley 2 Sheffield FC 1

The world’s oldest football club were edged out by the world’s oldest football club called Frickley Athletic in a very watchable game and Bax’s first win as Frickley boss.

The first 20-odd minutes were all Sheffield as Blues’ custodian Adam Hewitson made a couple of great saves, a crucial tackle and watched a couple of efforts go narrowly wide.

But there was little he could in the 22nd minute when Sheffield opened the scoring directly from a well-struck free kick.

This seemed to spur The Azzurri into action and in response Josh Haigh met a delightful cross with a ferocious volley to level it on 28 minutes.

As half time neared, The Blues had a shot saved and then won a free kick just outside the box. The free kick was hit with venom but crashed against the bar. Luke Williams was alive to the opportunity, pouncing to tuck away the rebound and give The Azzurri the advantage at the break. HT 2-1.

Early in the second period the gaffer made a raft of substitutions. And one of these, Matty Hughes, did what he does and got the afterburners on, hit a rocket of a shot and rattled the crossbar. I popped down The Wezzie first thing this morning and the bar was still shaking.

Sheffield weren’t going to accept defeat lying down. Thus they proceeded to hit the bar themselves with a side-footed shot and forced Hewitson into 2 more top stops.

The Blues clung on to their lead and even went close to extending it with a few minutes left on the clock. Gracjan Klimczak managed a snapshot from 8 yards out only to see Sheffield’s keeper push it over at full stretch. FT 2-1.

Stay calm. It’s only preseason 😉

WEBMASTER MOTM – we were committed when defending and lively going forward. Great to see in conditions that weren’t conducive of such good football. However, the Glitterball has to go to Adam ‘The Reflex’ Hewitson. He simply kept us in it at times. Attaboy, Adam!

The weather ensured that it was mainly the hardy and rust-resistant through the gate. We thank you for coming out and supporting the lads on such a grotty evening!

The Blues are next in action on Friday 12th July, when we host Emley at The Wezzie, 7.30pm kickoff. Hope to see you all there….
