WHAT’S THE TIME!!!!!!!
Frickley Athletic U23’s 5
Riasa Leeds U23s 0
With a L & a D from our last 2 games, the Young Blues were looking for a W to get back on the right track – & WoW What a Wonderful Way to get back to Winning Ways at the Wezzie
The Young Azzurri played very very well last week – but they surpassed even that last night with an imperious display that took 2 misty eyed Media hacks back to the halcyon days of the Invincibles
The return of the always excellent Ross (The Boss / Pitbull) Nowodny added some steel to the defensive unit, & Ryan Clements was the stand out in an outstanding defensive unit (plus Ryan scored an absolute belter). As a result Dylan Safehands Sefton was able to take his seat in the main stand with the media boys again & continued the discussion about wrestling from its 1970s heyday – he confirmed that his favourite ‘signature moves’ were the Jim Breaks Grapevine & Tibor Szakacs flying back hand chop
Up top Bailey Cowsell was back to his best & big shout outs to Joe Wilson (who gets better with every game) & Harry McCuddan who, in his 2nd game for us, was the ‘assist-meister’ being involved in setting up our first 3 goals & had an excellent all round game
We returned to winning ways with a great all round team performance, scoring 5 good goals & kept a rare clean sheet which is equally as pleasing.
Bailey Cowsell was returning to the starting line up along with crowd favourite Ross Nowodny, Joe Cooney was also back after missing last week with injury. It was Cowsell who got us off to a flying start, when defender Ryan Clements played a diagonal ball from his own half into the path of the talented Harry McCudden who skillfully controlled the ball then fired a powerful left foot shot towards the bottom corner which was superbly saved by the visiting keeper but the rebound was pounced on by Bailey 1-0 to the Blues
It was soon 2-0 when the inform Joe Wilson converted from just inside the penalty box finishing off a Cowsell cross that was teed up by Harry McCudden, & then it was 3 the home side were putting on a show!
A Joe Cooney corner was cleared back to him and he delivered a perfect in-swinging cross that found Harry McCudden at the far post who unselfishly laid the ball off to defender Ryan Clements who fired an unstoppable shot back across the keeper into the far bottom corner.
Frickley were now full of confidence and creating plenty of opportunities. One particular chance saw Ross Nowodny get in behind down the right hand side & he pulled the ball back to the opposite full back Wilfey Woodham who struck a thunderous left footed shot from outside the box, showing great technique only to see it strike the cross bar (the goal posts are still shaking now), a wonderful effort from a very talented young footballer. It really would have been quite some goal – fine margins…..
The home side didn’t have to wait long to get their fourth when the inform Cowsell scored the goal of the game running onto a through ball from Joe Wilson, the defender tried to force him wide but he fired a wonderful right foot strike across the stranded keeper into the far bottom corner, 4-0 a great first half performance.
The home side continued in the same mood second half with the welcome return of defender Super Danny Selwood (a halftime sub). Alfie Studd & James Nicklin were both having good games in midfield & defence as Frickley started to dominate again. Another sub Theo Cassidy played a delicious through ball, after good work from Alfie Studd in midfield, to Bailey Cowsell who gleefully waltzed past the on rushing keeper to walk the ball home to score his deserved hatrick – you won’t see better footwork in the Strictly final. What time is it 5 to Frickley!!
To be fair to our visitors they could easily have crumbled with still 30 mins left but after several near misses, good defending & some brave goalkeeping, we were unable to add to the scoreline. Dylan Sefton had a quiet night for a change but made one or two timely interceptions with his feet when the visitors threatened to ensure the defensive unit got the cleano that they deserved
Overall it was a very commanding display from the home side, all 5 goals were taken very confidently with standout performances from Bailey Cowsell, Joe Wilson, Harry McCudden & Joe Cooney but the Bob Smith MOTM went to midfielder Alfie Studd who broke play up in midfield, hardly misplaced a pass & gave a very disciplined performance in the holding midfielder role. Well done Alfie 👏
