Our u23 vs emley u23s – a brief match report
Frickley Athletic U23’s 2
Emley U23’s 4
So last week we played 2nd in the league….& we were undone by 2 very dubious goals – this week we played top of the league….& we were undone by 2 very spawny goals – but that’s the way the Oreo crumbles some times
The boys were probably a wee bit short of the usual high benchmark that they set for themselves but I still think they were good enough for a point but the luck wasn’t with them – typified by Emleys 2nd goal; the initial shot was set to trouble the donkeys in the allotments behind the pit end goal, when it got a massive deflection & gave Alfie in goal no chance (he’d already set off to get the ladders to go & bring the ball back)
The unbeaten league leaders visited Westfield Lane last night they ended up staying unbeaten & taking all 3 points back to Emley.
We were quick out of the blocks & had a great chance to score with their 1st attack when Atley Jackson was clean through on goal but the visiting goalkeeping made a great save with his feet.
Emley actually opened the scoring with their 1st opportunity at goal inside the 1st 5 mins when they scored with a good strike into the top corner.
The game settled down a bit with both teams creating half chances to score, then after 30 mins the Young Azzurri equalised with another contender for goal of the season. Leo Cosgrove exchange passes with Tom Cotson, got the ball back & cut inside from the left hand side to fire an unstoppable right foot shot from outside of the box to give the visiting gk no chance at all.
Both side had great chances to increase their leads before half time Bailey Cowsell was unfortunate to see his goal bound effort blocked after good work from Lucas Brown and Alfie Denton some how cleared a goal bound effort off the line from the dangerous Emley forward.
Half time 1-1
The 2nd half unfortunately belonged to the visitors scoring 2 quick goals in the opening 15mins & then as the home side pushed forward to try to get back into the game they conceded a 4th goal.
Credit to Frickley though they didn’t give up and scored another great goal when Bailey Cowsell crossed for Freddie Dale to skillfully volley home into far corner, but time had run out for the hosts, Emley on their second half performance fully deserved all 3 points.
The Bob Smith MOTM went to young full back Ben Jennings who gave another impressive performance on a difficult night for his side.
We will be looking to get back to winning ways & we are back at home again next Thursday when we entertain Bradford Central at the Wez, 7.45pm kick off. It would be great to see some good numbers there to support the boys
