Match Preview – Saturday 16th August 2025

After a couple of away fixtures, the Blues return to the Wezzie as we welcome Thackley AFC for our latest NCEL Premier Division fixture, kick off at 3:00pm
Blues News
For the second week in a row, it was a case of what might have been last time out as the Blues suffered a first league defeat of the season at the hands of Barton Town 1-0.
The Barton winner was a goal surrounded by potential offside controversy and was the only real clear cut chance the home side had in the game, with the Blues creating numerous opportunities only to be denied by the woodwork or some fantastic goalkeeping.
Despite the scoreline, it’s another game with more positives than negatives to take from it as the Blues continue to build into this season. It’s another game that, on a different day, we would have taken at least a point from and, if performances continue in that vein, results will follow.
The defeat sees the Blues come into the weekend in 12th place in the early NCEL table but with a chance to climb significantly with a strong result tomorrow.
Form – WLL
League Standing – P2, W1, D0, L1, Pts 3, Pos 12th
Our Opponents
Our visitors on Saturday are Thackley AFC. The Dennyboys have come into this season on the back of a tumultuous summer after losing their manager and most of their team to other NCEL clubs over the summer.
It means a side that looks very different to the one which reached the NCEL Premier Play Offs last year but that has started the new season strongly, sitting 3rd in the early table having yet to taste defeat from their opening 3 games.
It’s 2 victories and a draw in the league for them so far, the latest of which was a 0-0 draw with Horbury Town in midweek. The Dennyboys have also kept 3 consecutive league clean sheets, though they did suffer a 4-0 defeat to Irlam in the FA Cup. Either way, it promises to be an exciting game tomorrow.
Form – WLWD
League Standing – P3, W2, D1, L0, Pts 7, Pos 3rd
Previous Meetings
Last season, the points were split between the two sides, with both teams victorious in their respective home fixtures.
Frickley were 3-0 winners at the Wezzie back in November in Tom’s first game in the dugout before Thackley reversed the result a month later with a 3-1 victory at Dennyfield
The Blues have a good record over Thackley at Westfield Lane, having won 3-0 in each of the last two seasons, so hopefully we can carry on that form and pick up 3 points tomorrow
