Recap
Winterton Rangers 0 Frickley 2
Next up was a midweek trip to Winterton Rangers.
Winterton’s West Street Stadium is a tidy little ground with a decent sized main stand for this level, a busy little café and a well-appointed outdoor bar area. Our only complaint was that at the end of a beautiful day, some of the ground was in such deep shade, aided and abetted by the cooling influence of the nearby River Humber, that my compadre had to get his coat on to keep out the evening chill.
Newly promoted to the NCEL Premier Division based on their performances over the previous two part-seasons, Rangers were never going to be a pushover. Their recent preseason performances had shown similar intent. However, the Blue faithful (Neil, Gerry and Pen are pictured, top, in front of the aforementioned stand, and my finger in the top corner just enhances the image imo) were treated to a first win of Frickley’s preseason.
The positives from the Grimsby were built upon and multiplied tenfold. A neat corner routine, early in the first half, saw Lee Frecklington tuck away his second in as many games.
A confident showing, including a team-building bit of handbags sparked by a foul on Tom Sawyer, produced nothing more by way of goals until Wellsy rounded the Winterton keeper to score his first goal of preseason in the final few minutes of the game. Wild celebrations with the fans followed.
It’s just a psf but happy days!
