Recap

Prescot Cables 0 Frickley 2
A stunning second half brace from Brad Wells topped off a great team performance on Merseyside and carried The Blues into the next round of the FA Trophy.
Unusually, The Gaffer was able to name the same starting eleven for the second game in succession. It was all change on the bench though as Tyler Williams and Nathan Whitehead returned to duty and striker Devonte Morton, new signing from Pickering, made his first appearance on the teamsheet.
The first half was mainly Joe Stacey giving the Cables right back a torrid time, ably supported by Westy and Jaz Goundry, trying to feed Crouz and Wellsy. However, nothing quite sat up right on a bobbly, long-grassed pitch.
At the other end, aside of Jake Askew pulling off a decent one-handed save to deny a Prescot forward in the 10th minute, the defensive unit were solid and kept Prescot chances to a minimum. HT 0-0.
The second period started with Tyler replacing Burnsy, then Les Verts were restricted to a couple of long range efforts in the opening minutes of the half.
A big talking point came around the hour mark when Prescot’s skipper nipped in at an Azzurri drop ball to net what looked like the opener and the ref pointed to the centre spot. But as the sides lined up to restart, the young liner made it clear that no Frickley player had touched the ball and the goal was disallowed. Respect to the liner, took some cojones that did.
Devonte Morton came on for Crouz to make his Blues debut and minutes later we were ahead. Wellsy picked the pocket of a dithering Cables defender on the corner of the box in the 69th minute. With plenty still to do, The Bomber jinked round another pair of the back line before slotting his shot past the keeper.
Stacey and Luis Adlard kept taking the game to Prescot but The Boys in Green were fairly comfortable under pressure as the home side searched for an equaliser.
Then in the last minute, with the Cables keeper well out of his area, Adlard broke at pace before squaring to Wellsy on the half way line. What followed will live long in the memory of all those fortunate enough to be present. Bomber looked up and took aim, hitting the sweetest strike into the top corner from over 50 yards out. What. A. Goal!
Score that in the Premier League and it’s getting replayed on the opening credits of Match of the Day for the next decade, minimum. FT 0-2.
The tactics, team work and moments of individual brilliance came together perfectly to ensure that we kept our unbeaten record at Prescot Cables and saw us into Monday’s draw. Wembley here we come 😉
WEBMASTER MOTM – everyone played well and did their jobs admirably, bar none. The standouts were Brad B and Goundry at the back, Kegan Everington and Joe West in the engine room and Adlard and Stacey out on the wings. It was superb to see Tyler back as well. Stacey’s superb performance would have picked up motm on any other afternoon but Wellsy’s hard running and his goals take this week’s Glitterball.. Brad’s first goal was good but his second was stupendous – all bets are off for goal of the season 21/22. Bravo sir!
TWITTER POLL – Twitter agreed as Brad Wells came out on top, followed by Joe Stacey. Luis Adlard and Joe West also polled. Thanks to everyone who voted.
479 through the gate, with a good contingent from SESKU despite an unavoidable late cancellation of the supporters’ bus (all our best wishes to Ian and family). Thanks for your wonderful support.
