Recap
Frickley 2 Brigg Town 2
The rain and shine left a rainbow over The Wezzie in the second half of PSF 2. Now they say there’s a crock of gold at the end of the rainbow. I don’t know about that but The Blues and their capable opponents, Brigg Town, certainly served up a bucketload of entertainment in this two-all draw. Pure gold!
Les Blues started well with a long range effort from Zav Elkins, narrowly wide, and a shot from Lloyd Smith, safely held.
But it was the visitors who took the lead after fifteen minutes, although the scorer looked suspiciously offside.
This started a period of Brigg dominance. The Blues only chance of note coming from Rich Collier but the Colonel’s shot was well held. Meanwhile, at the other end, Brigg’s sharp passing was causing significant discomfort and saw them hit the post twice in the run up to half time. HT 0-1.
After the break, The Azzurri upped their game, squaring it about twenty minutes in. Alex Varley gave warning when he headed just over but Lloydy went one better as he clinically slotted home Rieves Boocock’s slide rule pass.
However, Brigg got their noses back in front less than ten minutes later. Failure to clear an innocuous looking ball forced the Boys in Blue into some desperate defending. Callum Bradbury made a smart stop then Varls blocked a stinging drive before Brigg netted at the third time of asking.
However, from then on it was largely about The Blues.
Big Al Keita was in the thick of it, hitting a swerving, dipping shot that must’ve made the Brigg keeper seasick as he desperately palmed it away.
Then Big Al was involved in a nice move with Lloydy and Eliel Maville-Anku that left the Brigg defence chasing shadows. The only thing missing was a final touch to stick it in the net.
Big Al did get the ball in the onion bag shortly after, but the liner had flagged for offside. It must’ve been a tight call.
Just as it looked like the visitors would hold out to finish on top, the ball fell to Cleggy out wide and he put it on a plate for Josh Haigh with a fizzing low cross into the six yard box. Haighy made no mistake. It was an U23s’ goal right there to make it two apiece. FT 2-2.
Virtually copied and pasted from the last match report – It’s preseason so the result is meaningless, but the draw seemed a fair reflection of the evening’s events.
WEBMASTER MOTM – we put in a strong all round performance in a very watchable game, playing some decent football and showing a bit of character to come from behind twice. Standouts to these eyes were Varls for playing the full 90 minutes and solid displays from The Elk, Keenan Mannings and Keegan Townrow. Morgan James put in a proper shift as well. Shoutouts too to the subs with impressive cameos from Jonesy, Big Al, Cleggy and Haighy. And Eliel Maville-Anku injected a defence-unsettling combo of power and pace late on. But the Glitterball goes to one of the goal scorers, Lloyd Smith. He was a constant threat, a joy to watch and downright hard working! Based on this showing, I doubt this will be his last motm. Lovely stuff, Lloydy!
