Recap

Beverley Town 4 Frickley 0

After a fairly solid opening 44 minutes at Beverley Town, it all went Pete Tong with defending more akin to the Beverley Sisters at times. And so it was that 2025 started with a heavy defeat on the road.

There were first starts for Ben Gelder and Tom Alngohuro who came in for the suspended Tom Claisse, while Charlie Clegg moved to the bench.

The Blues were under the cosh for the first 10 minutes as HDH had to make 2 or 3 saves and Bev hit the post.

But slowly we worked our way into the game, Chippy and Zav both having shots from range.

The home side continued to probe. A Sweeping move down the right ended with them firing narrowly over. And when 1 on 1 with HDH they slid the ball wide.

On the half hour, Tom A went on a mazy run before forcing the keeper to get down smartish to save.

Big Al pulled the ball back to Tom A, he took aim and shot, the keeper blocked it, pushing it towards Chippy. However, the ball came back at Chippy too quickly and he lifted the rebound over the bar.

A minute later, Chippy was played in but his attempt hit the keeper’s body and was deflected agonisingly wide.

Chippy turned creator as he squared to Tom A but the defender got a slight touch on it, taking it behind Tom’s run, resulting in an air shot.

Just as it looked like we’d go in goalless at the break, Bev went ahead. As he chased a ball over the top, a Bev forward got a quarter of a yard on his marker but that was all he needed, firing in from 15 yards. HT 1-0.

Within 11 minutes of the restart, the hosts had taken the game away from us. In the 49th minute, Bev crossed, it wasn’t cleared and the forward got a foot to it as he fell but it snuck in the bottom corner.

Big Al dragged a low shot wide, but on 56 minutes, Bev extended their lead. Cutting inside from the right, they cracked a shot into the top corner. There’s no stopping those.

The 2 sides traded blows for the last half an hour. Bev whipped a low ball across the 6 yard box but the forward couldn’t get to it with the goal gaping. And Bev blazed over after a good run by their winger.

At the other end, Tommo, on as sub, crossed to fellow replacement, Cleggy, but he was eased out of the way, preventing the chance on goal. Tom A was brought down 25 yards out and Zav put the resulting free kick just over.

Bev rubbed salt in the wounds in the last minute, tapping in from a corner that simply wasn’t dealt with properly. FT 4-0.

It was bloody freezing, the pitch was slippy (no fault of Bev’s) and we didn’t get a decision all afternoon. But none of these affected the result, we were done by a Bev side who were more clinical than we were. We go again next time.

WEBMASTER MOTM – despite a scoreline that flattered the home side a little, there were plenty of positive performances. The Elk and Butch strode forward like wingbacks, Joel Spence did what Joel Spence does best, and subs Cleggy and Tommo were sprightly. Big Al was energetic and Chippy was dynamic. But the Glitterball goes to Tom Alngohuru. The Guru’s weaving running had the home defence on their heels. Top effort, Tom!

TWITTER MOTM – Joel Spence takes it from Tom Alngohuru, Marcel Chipamaunga and Big Al Keita. Thanks to all who voted.

SPONSORS/VOLUNTEERS MOTM – Tom Alngohuru was chosen by David Carr. Well done, Tom!

422 through the gate, with good numbers from the United States of SESKU. Thank you for travelling all that way on a bitterly cold day to support the Boys in Blue!

The Blues are next in action on Saturday 18th January, when we travel to Silsden, 3pm kickoff. Hope to see you all there….
