The Club is sad to report the death of former player Tony Cartwright who passed away on 2nd January 2024 aged 81.

A lifelong resident of South Kirkby, Tony started in competitive local football in the Fitzwilliam League, quickly attracting the attention of Football League club scouts, and had spells with Newcastle United, Barnsley and Doncaster Rovers before joining Frickley Colliery FC for the 1962/63 season in the Cheshire County League mostly as a centre forward with occasional games as a winger.

Between 1962/63 and 1967/68 he played around 150 first team games, scoring 28 goals, and also played with the Reserves in the Yorkshire League. One of the highlights of his time at Frickley was during his second season when he scored 2 goals in a spectacular 3-1 away win over table topping Macclesfield Town in the FA Cup 4th Qualifying Round in front of a crowd of 4000, including 400 travelling from Frickley. This gained Frickley entry into the 1st Round Proper of the FA Cup (only the 3rd time Frickley had reached that stage) where he scored Frickley’s only goal in a 2-1 away defeat at Notts County.

Tony also played in the local Sheffield and Hallamshire County FA Senior Challenge Cup Final in May 1967 which Frickley won 4-1 at Norton Woodseats.

In 1968, Tony moved to have a season with Bridlington Trinity in the Yorkshire league, returning to Frickley for the 1969/70 season where he played a further 12 games at the start of the season.

Tony can be seen in the above image as the middle player in the bottom row, alongside the rest of the Frickley team from the 1963/64 season

Tony is survived by his wife Barbara, son Glynn, daughters Kay and Sharon, 8 Grandchildren and 9 Great Grandchildren, to whom the club extends its deepest sympathies on their sad loss.

Tony’s funeral takes place on Thursday 18th January at 10:50am at Ardsley Crematorium, Barnsley then afterwards at South Kirkby Cricket Club, Millers Walk, off Stockingste near it’s junction with Mill Lane.

A true Frickley legend who we are very sad to lose. Rest in peace Tony
