Did somebody say El Classicoal?? It’s our final home preseason friendly and it sees us face off against another NPL side in our local friends and rivals Pontefract Collieries, kick off is at 7:30pm

Blues News

It was defeat last time out for the Blues in our latest Preseason Friendly as they fell to a 4-2 defeat to Brighouse Town. However, the scoreline doesn’t tell the full story as both sides were evenly matched for 70 minutes, with Frickley taking a 2-1 lead earlier in the tie through a Jack Varley penalty and a Rob Guilfoyle direct corner.

Late substitutions disrupted what had been a very strong performance and allowed Brighouse to take the game away from the Blues. But up to that point, we had been good value for the lead and had created plenty of chances to be even further in front.

With just over a week to go until the NCEL opener against Pickering, Bax’s Blues are looking in good shape and playing some great football to boot. Yes it’s only preseason but it’s looking like it could be an exciting campaign ahead!!

Our Opponent

It’s El Classicoal so that can only mean the visit of our local rivals Pontefract Collieries. Colls are the final NPL opponent to visit the Wezzie this preseason and, on paper, look to be the toughest challenge as they finished 4th in the Division One East table, losing out to Dunston in the play-offs.

It’s been a summer of change for them as well with long term manager Craig Rouse departing for Cleethorpes. Jimmy Williams has taken the reins and kept together the majority of last seasons play-off side whilst adding one or two high quality additions. Look out for ex-Blues Danny and Josh Burns in the Colls backline

They have faced 4 other NCEL sides in preseason to this point, opening with a 1-0 win away at Glasshoughton Welfare before falling to a 4-1 defeat to Penistone Church. They bounced back from this with a 1-1 draw against Wakefield before a 2-1 victory over Knaresborough on Tuesday night.

Previous Meetings

The El Classicoal has become a staple of both sides preseason campaigns since the Blues relegation to the NCEL at the end of the 2021/22 season. Ponte have won both those encounters, with a 1-0 win at the Wezzie in 2022 before a 5-0 victory at Ponte prior to last season (a game in which Bax featured for the away side)
