- Talented – yeah
- Azzurri – hell yes!
We are delighted to announce the signing of Ethan Kenny – a young, talented baller who joins us from Rotherham United.
His thoughts on joining the club, his hopes for this season & his future ambitions:
Webmaster: tell us a bit about yourself. What position you play, what type of player are you & who have you played for previously
Ethan Kenny: I play in a few positions, my preferred position is the ‘number 10’ but I can play either wing or striker. I like to be involved with the game and get the ball to my feet and try make things happen like creating chances in and around the box. I started playing football when I was 6 years old and started at Stocksbridge Park Steels but got scouted for Rotherham when I was 10, I got a 2 year scholarship there when I was 16 and just finished there.
WM: what about life outside football – job / family / other interests etc
EK: outside of football I work at a factory in Rotherham that makes windows and doors so nothing really exciting but it’s better than being sat at home.
WM: who is the best player that you’ve played with or against & why
EK: I’ve played with a lot of good players while I was at Rotherham, a few from the first of my scholarship was worthy of getting a pro but just missed out and a few who are my age who I thought should’ve got pros as well but the best player I’ve played against is either Alexander Robertson who plays for Man City or Omari Hutchinson who plays Arsenal.
WM: & who was your hero when you got into playing football
EK: my footballing idol while I was growing up and made me get into football was probably Lionel Messi, how he plays football in general is just unreal and I try to base my playing style on his.
WM: how did the phone call go when Frecks got in touch about joining us?
EK: well while I was still at Rotherham I wasn’t getting much game time so the manager at Rotherham spoke to Frecks and told me to go to training and a chance to play in a friendly so I took the chance to do that and I thought I played well, so after that Frecks rang me asking me if I’ve got anything ready for next season and I hadn’t so he asked me if I wanted to join Frickley and I was happy with what he was saying to me about the aims for this season so I was wanting to be part of it.
WM: what’s your ultimate ambition in football? Where do you want to be in 5 or 10 years time?
EK: I want to be back at a football league club but that time as a professional and not just a scholar.
WM: you were regularly amongst the goals for Rotherham U21s, so tell us are you a ‘fox in the box’ or do you prefer ‘top bins’ from 25 yards, or don’t you care so long as they go in?
EK: I like to think I can score the 25 yarder that flies into the top bins and I like to think I can score in the 6 yard box so I don’t really care as long as they go in.
WM: what are your hopes for the team, & for yourself, this season
EK: for the team, I hope we get promoted, I believe the squad we’ve got for this year we can do that and I believe we’ll work hard enough to get it. For myself, as it’s my first year in non league football and for it to be at a high level I want to be playing as much as I can and making impacts to help the team succeed. I hope I can score and assist a few along the way but most importantly for me is the team and winning.
WM: did you get to play at the New York Stadium? We’ve played a cup final there a few years back, great ground.
EK: through the 8 years I spent at Rotherham, I got to play at the stadium a few times. I played against AFC Wimbledon in the Youth Alliance Cup Final at The New York and Arsenal most recently in the FA Youth Cup.
Welcome aboard Ethan Kenny
