i2i United 1 Frickley U-23’s 1
Frickley U-23’s were on their travels again last night and were looking to get back to winning ways.
The Young Azzurri welcomed back Tyler Sheard, Atley Jackson, Taylor Amitage and Matty Hughes to the starting 11.
Starting the brighter side, creating several good half chances in the opening 15 minutes. They deservedly took the lead when Atley Jackson fired home from 25 yards after good work from Joe Wilson and Harry Alexander.
Frickley were now on top, they almost doubled their lead when Skipper Harry Alexander worked a short corner and superbly fired a right foot curling shot that unfortunately hit the inside of the post and was scrambled away to safety.
To be fair, the home side responded in the 2nd half and veteran defender Callum Beaumont, along with young defender Wilfey Woodham, made numerous last ditch challenges. And GK Dylan Sefton was called on to make some good saves as the host went in search of an equaliser.
Unfortunately for the Young Azzurri, a ball wasn’t cleared on the left hand side and the ball across was steered into the far corner to equalise. 20 minutes left – all to play for.
Frickley to their credit never gave in and probably created several chances good enough to go home with the 3 points. 1st chance fell to Matty Hughes who burst clear and fired straight at the opposing keeper and his rebound header lacked power. Atley Jackson then had another pile driver from the edge of the box which agonisingly shaved the post, and sub Dwight Addai was causing havoc on the left wing with one mesmerising run which saw him beat 3 defenders only to see his shot saved. The final chance fell to the outstanding and hardworking captain Harry Alexander who curled a left footer, this time which was just wide.
The home side did have several chances of their own as the game became very stretched but ultimately it ended 1-1 and was probably about right as both teams couldn’t convert any of their late chances.
Bob Smith motm went to Harry Alexander who worked his socks off for his team and on another day would have scored 2 goals for his outstanding efforts.
