History repeats itself (we drew at home last season)

When Baroness Shriti Vadera used the term ‘green shoots of recovery’ who knew she was a Frickley fan?

The Azzurri gained their long overdue first point of the season, but it should have been all 3. The Blues gave their best display so far, controlled the game from gun to tape but profligacy in front of goal & a rash challenge in the box at the death meant that Wisbech equalised from the spot & shared the spoils.

Take it away Ken…..

New manager Dave Frecklington’s first game in charge of Frickley Athletic saw his side put in a dominant display against Wisbech Town. However, a lack of goals meant it wasn’t enough to take all 3 points as Declan Rogers levelled it late on.

Both new signings, Tom Clare (on loan from Boston) and Jonny Margetts fired early chances over for the hosts. The new boys linked up with the old guard in the 14th minute when Margetts fed Jacob Hazel who slid the ball into the path of Clare to sidefoot home from 6 yards out for 1-0.

A quarter of an hour later, Clare was on the end of a Rieves Boocock cross but hooked his shot over the bar.

On 38 minutes, Wisbech’s Sam Spencer thought he’d levelled it when he nodded in from a free kick but the linesman had his flag up.

On the stroke of half time Cody Prior hit the bar direct from a corner for Frickley.

The Blues came out with similar intent after the break, Boocock, Margetts and Clare all had attempts on goal in the first 3 minutes. The home side kept the pressure on as Hazel hit it wide from range and Clare burst through but dragged his shot wide of the post from a narrow angle.
With around 25 minutes left, Wisbech keeper Sam Wilson did well to block two close range shots from Margetts in quick succession.

Soon after, Clare lifted the ball just over the bar from a low Boocock drive across the 6 yard box.

Margetts also saw his acrobatic overhead kick go just wide of the upright.

Just when it looked like Frickley had done enough for the win, sub Ben Bodle committed a foul in the area and Declan Rogers made no mistake from the spot for The Fenmen.

Back to me

A much improved performance, especially for anyone that travelled to Sheffield last Tuesday, & on another day we’re racking up big numbers.

WEBMASTER MOTM – it’s been quite easy recently but Saturday saw a very good team performance. A big shout out to Mears & Newall at right & left back – I’ve got socks & underpants older than them – & they both gave assured performances, as did the whole back unit. JB (a comparative veteran now!) & Cody dug in well in midfield & on another day Margs wins the game on his own, a very good debut. But I’m giving the Glitterball to Tom Clare – finished off a good team move for the goal & provided the away defence with enough problems all game.

TWITTER POLL MOTM – The Twitterati reflected this too, with Tom Clare taking the poll, just ahead of Cody. Also polling were Brad Mears, Todd Jordan & Sam Liversidge. Thank you to everyone who voted. All votes get carried forward to the Player of the Month award.

A free week for the boys now as our next fixture is on Saturday as we travel to Market Drayton. If you want to travel on the Supporters Coach, get in touch with John Longbottom, full details are on a previous post
