Recap
Wombwell Town 0 Frickley 2
The Blues secured a massive three points on the road, grinding out a gritty 2-0 victory over a Wombwell Town side managed by former Frickley boss Karl Rose, to put a little distance between ourselves and the relegation zone.
The opening half was a cagey affair, with both sides sizing each other up. Frickley goalkeeper Sykes was tested early, comfortably holding onto a tame shot in the 1st minute before Tom A fired well over at the other end, seconds later.
Robbo showed tenacity to rob former Blues midfielder, Morgan James, and drive into the box in the 7th minute, only to see his shot flash just wide.
There was controversy in the 21st minute when a scramble in the Azzurri box was eventually cleared, leading to a break. Destiny was fouled, though the ref waved play on. The loose ball fell to Woolly who was clearly shoved over in the box, but shouts for a stonewall penalty were ignored.
Wombwell’s only significant sight of goal came from a defensive slip in the 26th minute, but Sykesy was alert to it, rushing out to smother the ball at the attacker’s feet.
An impressive long range effort from Destiny, hooking the ball over his shoulder, and a blocked shot from a Tom A, following a corner, kept the Wombwell keeper on his toes going into the break. HT 0-0.
The second period continued in attritional manor and it took until the 55th minute before Robbo sent a lovely cross field ball just beyond the reach of the galloping Tom A.
Robbo then had 3 big chances of his own, bursting through only to see his shot smothered by the keeper, and a low effort was saved after he cut inside. Then Destinyretrieved an overhit ball, dragged it back for Robbo but it caught under his feet, preventing a decent connection.
Not to be outdone, Woolly crossed for Radz to head inches wide on the hour. And Woolly’s corner nearly resulted in an own goal when it was glanced past the Wombwell keeper by a defender, but, in equal measure, creeping past the wrong side of the post too.
Cleggy, Butch and Keyghobadi replaced Destiny, Heselwood, and Woolly – changes that injected fresh life into the attack.
On 78 minutes, Cleggy broke the deadlock. A super diagonal ball by Jenko was headed down perfectly by Radz, leaving Cleggy the task of putting away the opener from the edge of the 6 yard box.
With 2 minutes remaining, Robbo sealed the deal with the goal he’d been threatening for the previous 88 minutes. After playing a neat 1-2 with Tom A, Robbo steamed towards another ex-Blue, Danny Burns, backpedaling at the heart of the Wombwell defence, then cut inside and buried his shot with aplomb.
Wombwell played out the final seconds with 10 men as their number 5 was finally sinned binned for his match-long dissent. FT 0-2.
In a game defined by defensive resolve and some late clinical finishing, The Boys in Blue proved their battling qualities as they gave the response to recent results that the gaffer Martyn Woolford was looking for.
WEBMASTER MOTM – it was a team performance, they all played for the badge. The defensive unit locked down the cleano, and Jenko and Radz were crucial in the build up to the first goal. Spence was back to his best with new signing Heselwood and Woolly in a tidy looking midfield. Destiny and Tom A were industrious up top. The subs slotted in nicely, Shayan Keyghobadi impressed me, and it was written in the stars that Cleggy would come off the bench to score on his 3rd debut. However, the Glitterball goes to Lucas Robinson. He was The Azzurri’s main creative force throughout. Right on, Robbo!
TWITTER MOTM – Joel Spence takes it from Lucas Robinson, Tom Radley and Will Jenkinson. Charlie Clegg also polled votes. Thanks to all who voted.
SPONSORS/VOLUNTEERS MOTM – Tom Radley was chosen by Mick Holmes. Well done, Radz!
198 through the gate, with a thronging mass from the Fiefdom of SESKU. We truly appreciate your unwavering support!
