Recap

Not the start that we wanted.

5 to 3 on the opening day of the season – everyone is full of joy & optimism. At 5 o’clock, some are still full of joy & optimism, others aren’t. We fell into the latter category yesterday but don’t reach for the cyanide tablets just yet – I’ve checked the calendar & it’s the 18th of August today. For the first 30 minutes we were very good, for the next 30 we weren’t & the final 30 were a non event apart from Haze’s red card.

Here’s a match report from someone who knows what he’s talking about:

Jacob Hazel had a good chance within a minute of kickoff but the Wezzie bobble caught him out. Rian McLean had an early header cleared off the line as well. However, it was the visitors Chasetown who took the lead in the 25th minute. Liam Kieron’s shot was well saved by Frickley’s Tom Jackson but the ball cannoned off defender Todd Jordan and into the net.

Jack McMenemy hit the post soon after for the Blues. Chasetown doubled their lead when Liam Kirton was allowed to run through unchallenged in the 41st minute to slot the ball through Jackson’s legs.

6 minutes after the break it was 3-0, Jack Cater needing two goes at it before hitting the net.

Frickley plugged away, looking for some sort of consolation. McMenemy’s shot across goal was the best of it. Jack Langston also skimmed the bar for the Scholars.

Things went from bad to worse for the hosts as skipper and talisman Jacob Hazel was red carded in the 75th minute.

Chasetown saw out the final minutes without too much trouble to take their first 3 points of the season.

Back to me – for what it’s worth I didn’t think it should have been a red but I was stood at the opposite side of the pitch. Even in the depths of a heavy home defeat, I saw things that pleased me, which brings me on to……

WEBMASTER MOTM – I thought Tom Jackson played well (& he had to, given the amount of work he had to do!), Sam L did all the dirty work in midfield, Cody Prior came into it more & more as the game went on. I particularly liked the look of Oli Russon when he came on in the 2nd half. Jack Harrison was the stand out in defence & came close to lifting the Glitterball but I’m awarding it to Sam Cable who looked dangerous every time he had the ball at his feet. The low early balls that he fizzed into the box in the first half caused allsorts of danger.

TWITTER POLL MOTM – didn’t get chance to do one last night so you’ll have to go without, but normal service will be resumed shortly

A quick turnaround & chance to put things right as we travel to Belper on Tuesday night – see you there
