Following our sad announcement at the weekend, we can now give you some more information about Des & his time at Frickley.
Sadly he died on 21st June aged 84.
Des initially started with us in 1958 as a forward before moving to half back & ultimately centre half. He played over 360 games for us in his 10 years at the club – putting him in the all time Top 12 in terms of appearances – & it is thought that he was never booked in all that time!
In the period from 1962 to 1868 he played in more than 90% of all our games which shows our important he was to the club & how valued he was by the club.
He featured in the team that played against Notts County in the FA Cup first round in 1963 & played in 3 Sheffield Cup finals, being on the winning side twice.
Des leaves 2 children, Michelle & David, & 3 grand children & the club extends its deepest sympathies on their loss.
His funeral takes place on 9th July at 11.30am at Ardsley Crematorium (Doncaster Road, Barnsley) & afterwards at The Junction (formerly The Nudge) at the top of Westfield Lane.
Sleep well Des – one of the Frickley Greats.

Huge thanks to John Longbottom – unofficial Frickley historian par excellence – for compiling all the data regarding Des career & providing the photograph
